Minutes of the BCAA
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, 2001

August 31, 2001, Port Coquitlam, BC

The meeting was held at the Port Coquitlam and District Hunting and Fishing Club

REPORTS

PRESIDENT – Al Hummel

I would like to thank everyone who took the time and a weekend off to attend the BC Outdoor Championships and our AGM. This will be an interesting meeting as it will almost give us a new Exec as well. I would like to thank everyone who participated in our elections and also those people who took

the time to write up a resume and let their name stand for a position. The only sad point I would like to bring to every ones attention is we still don't have a sport chair for the 2002 BC Summer Games in Nanimo. We are running out of time to submit a name. If we don't have someone willing to do this job by Oct 2001 we will be forced to bow out of these games. On a more positive note, we sent good representation to both the Target and 3 D Nationals, we were well represented. My thanks also go to Susan Lemke and The Port Coquitlam & District Hunting & Fishing Club for hosting this years BC Outdoors.

BOWHUNTING – 3-D VICE PRESIDENT – Sandy Watson

In response to the discussion around setting up a rotation system for hosting the 3-D Nationals. I have discussed this with several of our executive and I general we would support it. Some of the issues to be aware of would be that in any given year you have an outstanding club willing to accept the challenge of running the shoot and they may not be eligible. You may also find the province in order may not have a club willing to accept the challenge. We need to consider this when making our decision. We will support the decision of the executive board and do our utmost to make it work.

British Columbia has thirty-nine clubs registered with the B.C.A.A. We hosted one sanctioned 3-D shoot this year. The Salmon Arm archers did a wonderful job once again. The turn out was down somewhat but the results were very positive. We are once again able to support three very good representatives in attending the nationals. There will be several British Columbia archers attending the shoot in Winnipeg and I am very confident we will challenge for the medals.

The 3-D shoot attendance appears to be down somewhat this year. I feel it’s due to the fact that the clubs are making it too tough for the average archer. We tend to cater to the top ten in setting up the courses and forget about the majority. We have to consider that group. I believe if we bring the average distance of the target layout to thirty yards and set the up broadside. We will make tens possible for all shooters and in turn will bring more archers into the top group making it that much more competitive. At this point the same group attending the shoots are generally so far ahead of the average group that they have no hope of making the medals. Another thing we are looking at is flighting everyone with medals for each flight. I would like to know what other provinces feel about this. Perhaps we could pass on some of this information and come up with some good ideas to bring 3-D back to where it was five years ago.

Hunting season is fast approaching once again. In British Columbia we have a draw system open to all hunters along with an open season for some species. We also are blessed with an early ten-day bow season and a late ten-day season in most regions. Our province is split into regions with each region holding yearly meetings with the archery, gun, and guide representatives. It is very important to attend these meetings; the group most prepared changes the yearly regulations. I believe we have long whey to go in making the archery seasons longer. This is another topic we should share with each other.

ADMINISTRATION VICE PRESIDENT – James Wiebe

We have completed another government audit, Vision 2000. Marlee, Charles and I attended an interview in the fall to assess our final documents. In the end, we received a one percent increase in funding, which was significant, an as much as there was no more money put into the system.

Ron Ostermeier and I attended a seminar in Vancouver on the direction of the BC Summer Games. As you know, they are moving to a junior only event.

Al Hummel and I participated in a conference call on Northern Winter Games. We have renewed our formal agreement with the Northern Winter Games Society. We will have more control over rules and procedures in the future.

We are moving towards a competency based evaluation system for coach certification. I will be working with Greg Durward at the national level to coordinate our activities.

I conducted a number of coaching clinics.

ZONE 3 REPORT – Paul Mackwood

We keep busy at Semiahmoo Monday and Thursday evenings shooting indoors. Always seem to have a steady stream of new people to coach and a few have some interest in the JOP program. Unfortunately most parents say money is tight and they don’t know how long the kids will stay with it anyway. They take the BCAA application home but I suspect they’re still hinging on the fridge.

With Shawn as Archery Director the club will continue with it’s 3-Ds. Shawn put the clubs name in to host the indoor regionals. We can accommodate ten people on the line, and although paper shooting seems to be making an comeback, should be all right. Several of the outdoor shoots have been well attended compared to a couple years ago.

Maple Ridge Archers will move into their new facility, the Civic Leisure Centre in October. Membership fees will go up to accommodate the additional rent and it looks like they will be shooting Thursdays instead of Wednesdays.

The Fraser Valley Fathers Day shoot was well attended and we had great weather.

The Burke Mountain JOP Outdoors was a great success and gave people an opportunity to see there is still a lot of interest in archery. Much thanks to Sue and friends. Burke has hosted three well attended 3-Ds this year. September 22nd and 23rd the club will host an introduction to shooting clinic. This should be of particular interest to coaches as they will bring in guest speakers on various topics. The cost is $45.00 and anyone interested can call Sue.

ZONE 6 REPORT – Greg Durward

Victoria Bowmen had a very active outdoor season, hosting about 12 FITA Stars, several 3-D tournaments and the Canada Cup. The lack of a suitable indoor facility still hampers the JOP program and leaves the club with only a cold place to practice in the winter months

Cowichan Bowman has only a few members who are BCAA members. Most members are 3D shooters and hunters who see little reason to join the BCAA. Perhaps the new 3D Canbow program which the FCA is supposed to have in the works will be useful in enticing such clubs into the BCAA. The club has no trained coaches

Powell River is having difficulties because of the illness of Wayne Seney who has been the driving force behind the club.

Alberni Bowmen is still functioning but is very small and is 3D oriented.

Parksville is still a very healthy club with three (or four) judges available. Parksville hosted the very successful Indoor Championships for the second year.

Nanaimo It would appear that the attempt to start a club in Nanaimo has failed.

This fall we are going to undertake a "Coaching Retreat" concept. One or two sessions will be offered from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon. Coaches and advanced archers doing self-coaching will be invited with the BCAA defraying expenses. Coaches will have the opportunity to make presentations to each other, meet in informal discussion groups on specific topics, try some hands-on coaching methods and socialize. We will be actively seeking participants from non-BCAA clubs in the Zone as an outreach to show them what the BCAA has to offer. In particular the new FCA 3D Canbow program will be introduced.

ZONE 7 REPORT – Al Beattie

Pretty quiet in the zone since the June meeting . Kitwanga had to cancel their shoot for a number of reasons .They hope to have the shoot back on track next year , possibly at a different location . There were a few shoots in the zone this spring ; Prince rupert , Smithers , and Vanderhoof . Smithers has quite a few new shooters and there is interest in having a coaching / shooting clinic . This will be set up for next spring as they have said that would be the best time . I have attained my level 2 technical coaching . We have a new archer in Kitimat who came from parts east . Dan is a level 2 who has worked under Don Lovo . He tells me he enjoys coaching and is looking forward to getting involved here . Northern Winter Games planning will be moving into high gear with the summer over now and people getting back to their routine and the games fast approaching . Looking forward to a busy indoor season this winter .

JOP REPORT – Mary Ostermeier

Another busy year has passed and a new one will soon begin again with the start of the Indoor JOP at the various clubs We had all the usual tournaments with lots of participation in all of them. Lots of kids left the JOP but new ones always seem to replace their in greater numbers so we are still growing. The girls are still only a small percentage of the total and that is to bad since it is a fun sport for them as well.

We had some new clubs starting up with a Junior Program and hopefully they will keep going this coming season and maybe they will be ready to participate in the tournaments also.

Outdoor shooting in the program is only being done in about 3 or 4 clubs that I hear from. With the Summer Games going to the younger ages, we should encourage our young people to shoot during the outdoor season so they can be ready for the Summer Games, Nationals etc.

The JOP Olympian Trophies have been retired. They are still on display at Royal City Archers in New Westminster but no names have been added to them for some time. I am working to get all the names organised and they will be published on the UCAA Website for all to see, hopefully some time in October.

Some people have been working on a FITA Achievement Certificate for the JOP. There were some problems getting it going for printing but this is finally in the process of being printed and will be available for the next FITA season. As soon as I have them I will send out a sample and letter to all the Clubs. We are hoping that this award will get even the younger generation interested in shooting some FITA Tournaments and get them ready to compete in our major events. We need the young people to keep archery going well into the future.

I like to thank all the JOP Coordinators for doing a great job. I can’t do my part without you.

BCAA WEBMASTER – Greg Durward

The website continues to function as a resource for BC archers. Members are urged to keep their club information current as we do get inquiries about clubs from the internet.

EDITOR OF THE BC Archer – Greg Durward

I continue to get very little input from members at large. The magazine is published in text form as soon as it goes to the publisher and many people take advantage of this for an early peek. As an added way of communicating with archers in the BCAA when the BC Archer would not be timely, I have started an email news service. It is not regular but those archers for whom I have an email address will get periodic notes – usually on events with short deadlines. Any archers not receiving this can simply get me their email address with a copy of it to Jim Wiebe for BCAA records as well. Jim will not automatically give me emails as people join or get an email address.
